A unique and fun-filled fundraiser is set to take place this week in Martensville, as organizers prepare to host a Grocery Bingo night in support of the 574 Dakota Air Cadet Squadron.
The event puts a creative twist on traditional bingo, replacing typical cash prizes with themed grocery packages designed to help ease the burden of rising food costs while offering a fun night out for the community.
“It’s just like regular bingo, but with grocery-themed prizes,” organizer Sarah Morphy explained. “When someone wins, they get a package with everything you’d need to make a meal.”
Prize packages are built around specific themes, including meal kits like taco night bundles complete with seasoning, shells, ground beef, and all the fixings. Organizers are aiming to have around ten different themed packages available, each valued at approximately $50.
In addition to the main bingo prizes, attendees will have multiple chances to win throughout the evening. “Good neighbour” prizes will reward those sitting beside a bingo winner, while door prizes and grocery item giveaways between rounds will keep the excitement going.
The fundraiser is being organized by parent volunteers, with Morphy taking the lead after suggesting the idea following her experience attending similar events at the Nutana Legion.
Proceeds from the event will support the local air cadet program, helping fund activities such as training exercises and flying familiarization days, an experience that allows cadets to spend time in the air with certified pilots.
“A lot of the funding will go toward flying familiarization, which is a big opportunity for the kids but also comes with significant costs,” Morphy said.
Organizers are hoping to welcome around 200 attendees, though the venue has capacity for more. Tickets are available online in advance or can also be purchased at the door, though guests are encouraged to buy early.
Additional fundraising opportunities will be available at the event, including raffle tickets, 50/50 draws, concession sales, and extra bingo cards. Attendees are encouraged to bring cash, as on-site purchases will be cash-only.
The event has already seen strong community support, with donations coming in from local businesses in Martensville and Saskatoon, as well as generous contributions from local seniors groups.
“The community has been amazing,” Morphy said. “The seniors centres have been especially generous, helping with supplies, equipment, and even volunteering their time to call bingo.”
With excitement building and tickets steadily selling, organizers are hopeful this will be the first of many Grocery Bingo events in the community.
“I’m hoping it’s at least moderately successful,” Morphy said. “And if it is, we’d love to do another one in the fall and keep growing it from there.”
Residents are encouraged to come out, enjoy a fun evening, and support a program that provides valuable opportunities for local youth.
Prize donations are still being accepted up until the day of the fundraiser. Businesses, or individuals interested in contributing can contact Sarah Morphy at (306) 280-5480.
