Royals Start the Year With a Win

by Jocelyn Ottenbreit

The Martensville Royals football team played their first home game on Friday, September 9th at Wilson Field defeating the Humboldt Mohawks 30 – 7.

The defending nine-man provincial champions will play North Battleford’s John Paul II Crusaders, Delisle Rebels and Humboldt Mohawks in this year’s Conference Four.

Friday’s game saw returning starting quarterback Latrell Brown have a successful night with 12-26 passing for 223 yards and two touchdowns including a 54-yard touchdown strike to Shaidon Yuzik on the 6th play of the game.

Cale Robertston ended the first half with a red zone interception. Starting Grade 10 defensive back, Aidan Low, took the opening kickoff of the second half 90 yards for a touchdown. Defense came out strong with seven turnovers leaving Humboldt with only points scored on a kickoff after the low touchdown.

When asked what type of team to expect this year, assistant coach Tyler Munday said the 2022 Royals are a mix of a few veteran players and a group of eager young rookies. “We’re a group of athletic smart football players and we are looking to improve each week. Ideally, we’d like to hit our stride as we enter the playoff push in mid-October and we’ve got a core group of returning seniors that work hard and lead by example. We’ve got some exciting rookies as well that are showing they are ready to play at the senior level.”

This year’s coaching team will be; Head Coach: Craig Robertston, Assistant Coaches: Carter Dyck, Brodey Kliewer, Shane Garner, Barry Low, James Mueller, Tyler Munday, Cley Sametts, Kaden Solomon, Levi Wilson and General Manager Teresa Koop-Hunter.

Come out and cheer on your 2022-23 Martensville Royals Football team at their next home game on Thursday, September 29 at Wilson Field.
