The Martensville Royals opened their 2026 football season in impressive fashion on September 18, shutting out the Lloydminster Barons 34-0 in a commanding performance that showcased both offensive firepower and defensive dominance.
Despite a penalty-filled first half that disrupted the flow of the game, the Royals remained focused and executed when it mattered most. Grade 12 quarterback Garrett Gordon led the offense with poise and confidence, directing an attack that featured strong contributions from running back Austin Adamus and receivers Nathan Klein and Lane Robertson. The Royals found the end zone twice before halftime and carried a 14-0 lead into the break.
While the offense steadily built the advantage, the Royals’ defense set the tone throughout the evening. Senior leaders Jay Robertson and Denin Schmidt anchored a relentless defensive unit that kept the Barons off the scoreboard all night. Martensville swarmed to the football, limited big plays, and consistently won the battle at the line of scrimmage.
The Royals’ depth and versatility were on display in the second half as several offensive standouts also contributed on defense. Robertson and Adamus took turns on the defensive side of the ball, along with Klein, helping preserve the shutout while the offense continued to roll.
Martensville added three more touchdowns after halftime, with Blake Granatier, Lane Robertson, and Austin Adamus all crossing the goal line as the Royals pulled away for the convincing 34-0 victory.
The season-opening win is especially encouraging for a Royals team that enters the year with lower numbers than in previous seasons. While the roster may be smaller, the coaching staff believes the group has the talent, determination, and work ethic to compete every week.
“We may be down in numbers this year, but this is a hardworking group of young men,” said the coaching staff. “If we stay healthy, continue to improve each week, and keep buying into what we’re doing, we believe we can have a solid season and make a strong playoff run.”
The coaches were extremely pleased with the team’s effort, discipline, and willingness to contribute in multiple roles throughout the game. From veteran leadership to younger players stepping up when called upon, the Royals received contributions across the roster in what was a complete team victory.
With the season opener now behind them, the focus quickly shifts to the team’s Home Opener on Friday, September 25, at Wilson Field, where the Royals will host P.A. St. Mary’s. The team is hoping the community comes out to support the players and help create an exciting atmosphere.
“The boys fed off the energy they created on the field in Lloydminster, and we’re hoping to see a great crowd at Wilson Field this Friday,” the coaching staff said. “Hopefully we can pack the stands, make some noise, and give the players the home-field advantage they deserve.”
If the season opener is any indication, Royals fans have plenty to look forward to this fall. Martensville’s balanced offense, stingy defense, and strong team-first mentality have the Royals off to a perfect start and eager to build momentum heading into their first home game of the season.
