Martensville’s Matthew Letkeman Bringing It’s a Wonderful Life to Hometown Stage

by Shanine Sealey

For Martensville’s Matthew Letkeman, bringing the beloved holiday classic ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ to the stage at Martensville High School is an opportunity to return to his roots, share his passion for theatre and create meaningful experiences for local students.
Born and raised in Martensville, Letkeman attended Valley Manor School and Martensville High School, where he graduated as class valedictorian. His love of theatre began at a young age when he played the Magic Carpet in a production of ‘Aladdin’, sparking an interest in performing that continued throughout high school.
He later performed improv comedy with Persephone Theatre and earned a first-place award at the Canadian Model and Talent Convention in Toronto before moving to Vancouver to pursue acting. After earning two diplomas in performance and acting, Letkeman began working in film and television, securing roles in productions associated with Paramount+, Amazon and Apple TV.
Despite his success, he eventually felt drawn back to Saskatchewan, where he hoped to bring more theatrical opportunities to his hometown. Since returning, he has performed in several Saskatoon-area productions, including portraying Romeo in Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan’s 2023 production of Romeo & Juliet.
“I’ve always wanted to bring a play here to Martensville. The theatre in the high school here is amazing, it’s a beautiful space. And there’s so much talent in this town and area,” Letkeman explained.
It’s a Wonderful Life holds particular significance for Letkeman, who considers it one of his favourite films.
“Not often does a film shift how you think about life, but this one did for me,” he said. The upcoming production will remain faithful to the original story while incorporating some scenes, additional comedy and opportunities for performers to bring their own personalities to the characters.

One of the most exciting aspects of the project is the collaboration between professional theatre artists and Martensville High School students.

The partnership began more than a year ago when Letkeman approached MHS Principal Marty Johnson and events coordinator Angie Reddekopp with his vision. He has since worked closely with art teacher Camille Oberhoffer to bring the production together.
Approximately 50 students are involved in various roles, including acting, lighting, sound, costumes, props, set construction and stage crew. Alongside the adult cast and crew, the production involves more than 60 people.
Students have the opportunity to work directly with professional actors, directors, choreographers and technicians, gaining valuable experience and insight into the theatre industry.
“They are the future of art, film and theatre, so to give them these skills now is a really cool thing. I hope they gain a confidence in themselves to continue to create in the future!” Letkeman said.
For Letkeman, one of the most rewarding aspects has been watching students develop confidence and friendships throughout the process.
“Seeing students that were very shy in the audition room or at the beginning of this process, really come into their own and to see their eyes light up with creativity about a scene or their character is so cool,” he explained.
As opening night approaches, Letkeman is looking forward to seeing the cast and crew’s hard work come together and welcoming the community to celebrate local talent.
He also hopes this production will be the beginning of more theatrical opportunities in Martensville.
It’s a Wonderful Life will be presented at the Martensville High School theatre on November 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th, followed by December 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. All performances begin at 7:00 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for students and $38.50 for adults aged 19 and older, plus applicable taxes, and can be purchased through Dapper Duck Entertainment at www.dapperduckentertainment.com.
