With food bank usage continuing to rise, students from Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools are preparing to make a difference through the annual Halloweening for Hunger campaign, collecting non-perishable food donations for the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre.
For the past two decades, students at St. Joseph High School have played a leading role in the campaign, collecting more than 220,000 pounds of food through their door-to-door efforts. Over the years, the initiative has expanded to include participation from several other schools, with students working together to support those in need.
This year, student groups have signed up to cover more than 200 routes throughout several Saskatoon neighbourhoods. Students from Bishop James Mahoney High School will also be collecting donations in Martensville and Warman, extending the campaign’s reach into surrounding communities.
In preparation for the food drive, students have been distributing informational flyers to households along their designated routes, allowing residents to plan their contributions ahead of time.
Residents are encouraged to support the initiative by donating non-perishable food items when students visit their neighbourhoods during the evenings of October 30 and 31.
Those who may not be home when students arrive can still participate by leaving their donations outside, accompanied by the informational flyer previously delivered to their home or a note indicating that the items are intended for the food drive.
Following the campaign, donations will be loaded onto Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre trucks on November 2 at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph High School and November 3 at 9:45 a.m. at Bishop James Mahoney High School.
