Quick Response Contains Vehicle Fire in Martensville

by Shanine Sealey

A vehicle fire in Martensville last week prompted a response from the Martensville Fire Department (MFD), but was quickly brought under control with no injuries reported.
Martensville Fire Department crews were dispatched at approximately 8:04am on April 22nd to the parking lot of the Martensville Tim Hortons regarding a fire involving a Ford F-150. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
According to the department, seven firefighters responded to the call, with Engine 1, Tanker 20, and Command 10 attending the scene. Crews were able to contain the fire efficiently and no other vehicles or property were damaged as a result of the incident.
While the cause of the fire is still unknown, MFD Chief Dean Brooman noted that vehicle fires can happen without obvious warning signs; however, in the event of a vehicle fire, Brooman noted that motorists should pull over immediately if driving and get out and stay out of the vehicle.
“Call 911 and give a good address or land location. Stay away from the vehicle do not stand in front of the back or rear bumpers. Stay upwind of the smoke,” Brooman said.
The incident also serves as a timely reminder about seasonal fire risks. With snow melting and temperatures rising, dry grass can become highly flammable despite appearing damp.
“With the melting snow it may look wet, but it can be deceiving. Grass can dry quickly and be very flammable,” Brooman warned.
Residents are encouraged to clean around their fences, removing all dry and dead grass surrounding their garages, sheds and homes, and ensure there is no flammable material stacked or piled around structures, and be sure to only burn proper wood in your outdoor fire pit.
Brooman also stated that ensuring your homes are clearly marked with an address that is easily visible is something that everyone should be mindful of, as seconds count in an emergency.
