Fourteen year old Kody Gutek travelled to Wolfville, Nova Scotia to represent Team Saskatchewan in Football Canada U16 Challenge East. Saskatoon Minor football held a football academy for U16 and U18 players to introduce them to a higher level of football. In early May there were tryouts for Team Saskatchewan at an ID Camp and Gutek secured a spot as runningback on the team that travelled East. This is the first time Saskatchewan has competed at the national level for this age group and the furthest they have travelled.
Saskatchewan faced Ontario on July 18 and lost a close one 7-4. They played New Brunswick on July 21 and brought home the bronze medal winning 19-10. Kutek was impressed with the level of coaching provided. “Throughout the months of being with these players and coaches I’ve learned a lot for not only being a better football player but for being a better person”, commented Gutek. He was impressed with the inspirational quotes given by coach Brian Geubert and the skills he learned from running back coach Andre Lalonde. “I enjoyed the whole experience going to Nova Scotia and I think It’s an amazing program for conditioning and team bonding”. He plans to tryout again next year.
