Martensville Fire Department Hosting Annual Open House on October 7th

by Shanine Sealey

The Martensville Fire Department (MFD) is once again marking Fire Prevention Week by hosting their annual Open House on Wednesday, October 7th, with a focus on lithium-ion battery safety this week.
The MFD Open House will run from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Martensville Fire Hall and will feature a free hot dog and hamburger supper, interactive truck displays, a Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency bouncy house and a live demonstration.
The City of Martensville will also host its second Big Truck Petting Zoo alongside the event. Families will be able to explore City equipment including a tractor, tandem truck, skid steer, loader and grader, and meet the operators who use the equipment.
Children can also take part in a Snowplow Naming Contest, with the City looking for names for two of its snowplows ahead of the upcoming winter season.
The Open House comes as MFD continues to see a busy year for emergency response. According to Deputy Fire Chief James Taylor, the department has responded to 374 emergency calls for service so far this year, approximately six more than at the same point in 2025.
This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme focuses on reducing fire hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries, which are now commonly found in electronics, e-bikes, power tools and other everyday devices.
“In the past several years, we have seen an increase in the use of these types of batteries in many of our everyday electronics, e-bikes, and power tools,” Taylor said. “Although there are built in safety features in these electronics, they can fail over time or after being damaged.”
Taylor said residents should remain aware of the risks and follow safe charging practices. This includes unplugging devices once they are fully charged, using manufacturer-approved chargers and cords and charging devices on hard, flat surfaces rather than couches, beds or pillows.
MFD currently consists of Fire Chief Dean Brooman, Deputy Fire Chiefs James Taylor and Jason Marshall, Captains: Norm Hydamacka, Bill Symons, Ryan Cross, Levi Schutz, Chris Peters, Lieutenant: Michael Gawletz and Firefighters: Russell Gerwing, Dustin Hollman, Brent Dupuis, Chase Vandale, Rob Riviere, Noah Muench, Dawson Cote, Dylan Babecy, Nathan Brown, Danielle Bertoncini, Kalen Muench, Austin Zimmer, Craig Muench, Luke Fehr, Holly Maxin, Spencer Nikkel, Graeme Zacharias, Logan Reeder, and Scott Challis.
The October 7th Open House provides residents with an opportunity to meet members of the department, explore emergency and City equipment and learn more about fire prevention and the work firefighters do throughout the community.
