A photo shared by Martensville Veterinary Hospital is drawing attention to what experts say is an exceptionally active tick season in Saskatchewan.
The image, showing a tray covered with ticks removed from a single dog, highlights the growing concern for pet owners as tick populations surge across the province. According to staff at the clinic, the ticks were removed from a 7.7-pound dog that was recently brought into the clinic.
The photo shared by the clinic serves as a reminder for pet owners to regularly check their animals after spending time outdoors.
Veterinary professionals are encouraging pet owners to take preventative measures to protect their animals throughout the tick season.
Health officials and researchers are also encouraging residents to report ticks through the University of Saskatchewan’s eTick program. Individuals who find a tick on themselves or their pets can submit a photograph online for identification. Researchers will determine the species and provide information about potential disease risks. In some cases, participants may be asked to submit the tick for further analysis.
As Saskatchewan enters peak tick season, residents are reminded to check themselves, their children, and their pets after spending time outdoors, particularly in long grass, wooded areas, and parks.
