A packed house turned out at the North Ridge Community Centre on Friday, April 17, as the Grocery Bingo fundraiser in support of the 574 “Dakota” Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron exceeded expectations.
Organized by parent volunteers, the event welcomed 247 attendees, far surpassing initial expectations. Organizer Sarah Morphy said she had been hoping for around 200 people, but realistically expected closer to 150.
“We didn’t expect people to be lined up out the door by 6:00pm,” Morphy said. “It was an overwhelming success, and I am so happy with the turnout.”
The event offered a unique twist on traditional bingo, replacing cash prizes with themed grocery packages. Winners walked away with meal-based bundles, such as taco night, movie night, breakfast and barbeque themed packages.
In addition to the 10 bingo games and blackout round, attendees also had opportunities to win through door prizes, 50/50 draws, raffles, and “good neighbour” prizes awarded to those sitting beside bingo winners. A concession was also available throughout the evening.
Funds raised from the event will go directly toward supporting the local air cadet program, helping cover costs associated with training and activities, including flying familiarization opportunities.
“After crunching the numbers and taking our expenses into account, we were blown away,” Morphy said. “The money that we raised will help us achieve our goals and ensure that the kids will be able to do the training and activities that they have worked so hard for.”
The event also highlighted the strong level of community support behind the program, with donations and contributions coming from local businesses, seniors groups, and volunteers.
“It brought a tear to my eye to know there was so much support for this organization,” Morphy added. “Even if people didn’t know what they were supporting and only came out for an evening of fun, they were able to see the teamwork, dedication and hard work that these kids have.”
While organizers noted there are a few adjustments to be made for future events, including improving the flow at the admission table, early discussions are already underway about hosting another Grocery Bingo in the future.
“I feel like if we do decide to, the parents, cadets, and the community will be on board,” Morphy said.
