Community Carries On Doug Ward’s Legacy Through Annual Dog Walk

by Jocelyn Ottenbreit

The Martensville & District Lions Club is preparing to once again host the annual Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides, inviting residents to take part in a meaningful community event on Saturday, May 31st at Lions Park. The walk will follow a scenic route between Lions Park and Kinsmen Park, offering participants an opportunity to support a cause that makes a lasting impact across Canada.
Part of a nationwide initiative, the Walk for Dog Guides raises essential funds to provide professionally trained dog guides to individuals and families at no cost. Without the support of the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, these highly trained companions, which are valued between $35,000 and $50,000, would be out of reach for many who rely on them for independence and daily support.
“This year, thanks to donations, 79 individuals across Canada have been screened and approved to receive their life-changing Dog Guide,” said local Lions Club member Maria Fowler.
The process begins with an application submitted through a local Lions Club, followed by an in-depth assessment by the Dog Guide Foundation in Oakville, Ontario. Once approved, recipients travel to Oakville to be matched with a dog specifically selected to meet their individual needs. After the pairing, a trainer travels to the recipient’s home to assist with the transition and ensure a successful partnership. The program offers seven types of dog guides, each tailored to support different needs, including assistance for individuals with visual or hearing impairments, medical or physical disabilities, seizures, autism, and diabetes, as well as facility support dogs that work with professional agencies in traumatic or high-stress environments.
Locally, the Martensville walk continues to carry special meaning. Last year’s event was held in honour of longtime Lions member Doug Ward, who played a key role in organizing the fundraiser for many years. Ward passed away on the day of the 2025 walk following a battle with cancer, and in recognition of his dedication, the event was renamed “Walk for Doug”, a title that will continue in the years ahead.
Ward’s commitment helped grow the Martensville event into one of the top fundraising walks in Canada. In 2025, the event raised an impressive $27,231, ranking fifth nationally. This year, in recognition of that achievement, the Director of the Dog Guide Foundation from Oakville is expected to attend the local walk.
Community members can get involved by picking up pledge sheets at Pet Valu locations in Martensville and Warman or by registering online at www.walkfordogguides.com. Participants can sign up under the Martensville walk and join as individuals, teams, or supporters.
Donations of $20 or more are eligible for a tax receipt, with both online and in-person contributions accepted. Debit payments will also be available at the event.
Registration will begin at 1:00pm at Lions Park, with the walk set to start at 2:00pm Participants can also enjoy a BBQ following the walk, and special “pup cups” will be available for four-legged companions joining in on the day’s activities.
