The MHS Royals ended their regular season with a 4 and 2 record securing them a home playoff game Saturday when the Kindersley Kobras came to town. The weather finally cooperated as fans were treated to a beautiful afternoon and a Royals win. The Royals defeated the Kobras 35-7.
Gutek was first to get the Royals on the board with a handoff from QB Tynan Guenther. They added the 2-point convert to make it an early 8-0 lead. In the last play of the first quarter, Guenther connected with Kyler Fraser in a 40-yard pass and run for the major and a 14-0 lead. Early in the second, Guenther found Cote for a 30-yard completion which set up another Gutek touchdown. This would be called back on a holding call against the Royals. The Royals were plagued with many penalties, but they were fortunate this did not hamper their ability to keep the lead through the whole game.
The defense kept the Kobras off the scoreboard until the third quarter making it 14-7. At 9:20 in the fourth, Guenther completed a 25-yard pass to Fraser who ran 25 yards for the major. They completed a two point convert to make it a 22-7 game. Shortly after the Kobra punt was blocked and Josh Dyck recovered for the Royals on the Kobra 3-yard line. They would take advantage of the turnover when Connor Hamelin took the handoff and found the endzone making it 28-7. The defense blocked two punts during the game. The Royals would add to their lead late in the game when back-up quarterback Aiden Kliewor executed a QB sneak to make the final 35-7 for the Royals.
This win advanced the Royals into a provincial playoff against Esterhazy this Saturday in Esterhazy. The winner of this game with take on the winners of Lumsden and Melfort. GO ROYALS!
