The MHS Royals had their best season in 13 years as they earned a berth into the Provincial 9-man final in Melfort with an 8-0 record. They faced the Comets on their home turf November 9, as their loyal fans made the trip to Melfort to cheer on their Royals. The tough Comet defense, icy field conditions and a quick Melfort offense took a toll on the Royals. The Comet defense held the Royals to one point in the first half. The Comets came out firing and held the momentum in the first half. It took until the fourth quarter for the Royals to get a spark going. QB Aiden Kliewer went out with an injury so Kyler Fraser took over the quarterback duties. Fraser got the Royals’ first major as he ran the ball in himself from the Comet 45-yard line at 5:09 left in the fourth. He connected with Dylan Babecy for the 2-point conversion to get the crowd going. Fraser would add another touchdown but it was too little, too late as the Melfort Comets went on to win, bringing, home the provincial championship. The Royals brought home the silver medal, their first since the teams’ inception.

“Melfort was a big, strong team that played well”, commented Coach Lyle Evanisky. “With the field conditions, we couldn’t show our speed which is what made us so successful in the regular season”. He went on to comment how the team just missed a few long passes in the first quarter, that could have kept them in the game. “I’m very proud of my players and how they played right to the end.” The Royals played with a lot of heart.

Congratulations to the MHS Royals’ football team; 9-man Provincial SilverMedalists. The Royals will host their annual awards banquet on November 20th at the Northridge Hall.
