With COVID-19 changing the way that flu shots are typically offered to the community due to safety precautions, Martensville Collective Health and Wellness decided to get creative this year by offering a three-day drive-in clinic.
The drive-in clinic is held at the Martensville Aquatic Centre located at 927 3rd Street North, with the first two dates taking place Monday, October 19 and Tuesday, October 20. One more date will be held on Saturday, October 24 from 10am to 2pm. The first two dates saw approximately 700 people participate, and Dr. Allison Adamus of MCHW stated that, “It has been very well received.”
Those wanting to take part in this event are asked to stay in their vehicle as they approach the front entrance of the Aquatic Centre. From there, a team member will approach you car and hand you the required forms to complete. Those attending are required to have their health cards, as you are unable to receive a vaccine without a valid card. Vaccines will be given by one of the physicians on duty while you remain within your vehicle. If they are unable to reach you from within your vehicle, they may ask that you sit in a chair outside of the car. Those receiving flu vaccines are asked to wear a short sleeve top.
After receiving your vaccine, there is a waiting area that you will be asked to pull into and wait 15 minutes to ensure there are no adverse reactions. If you begin to feel unwell, MCHW asks that you honk your horn until a team member is able to find your vehicle and assess the situation.
For those looking for alternate options, the pharmacies in Martensville are offering vaccines by appointment. Be sure to contact the pharmacy prior to attending to book a time and screen for COVID-19 symptoms beforehand. When attending, you will likely be screened for COVID and will be asked to wear a mask or face covering, as well as a shirt with short sleeves. Arrive on time for your appointment, not early and limit the people that you bring in with you.
