The MHS girls team coached by Breanne Cooper, hosted the girls 1A provincial playoffs October 27 and 28. On Friday, the girls took the field at 9:00 am facing Osler in a very close match where Osler took the 2-1 win. The energy filled opening ceremonies which took place at 10 am officially kicked things off. The girls bounced back in their second game at 1:00 pm when they took the 6-1 win over Maymont. They made the playoff round on Saturday but fell to Chief Little Pine 4-1 taking 6th place in the province. Warman defeated Middle Lake in the gold medal game 3-0 to become provincial champions.
Coach Cooper would like to thank the students and staff that donated their time to ensure the championship was a success. “Our team really grew this year and we are looking forward to next year,” commented Cooper.
The boys’ team travelled to Yorkton for their provincial finals. They played Friday morning and lost a close one 4-3. Nicholson, Murray and Hradecki found the net for Martensville. They faced a dominant Notre Dame in the afternoon but failed to advance. The gold medal game saw Humboldt face North Battleford. Humboldt shut them out 4-0 to become gold medal champs.
The boys had a young team this year and coach Kate McKinnon is looking forward to watching these young players develop over the next three years. “We are losing several seniors after this season and will especially miss Josh Failler, our goalkeeper and one of our captains,” commented McKinnon. “He has been incredibly solid for us in the net these last two years.”
