Martensville Curling Club Introduces New Social League

written by Jocelyn Ottenbreit October 7, 2020

PLEASE NOTE – This Social League is now filled up

The Martensville Curling Club is excited and ready to start the 2020/2021 season. Memberships are up from last year and the facility is set to follow all COVID-19 procedures.

As a way to introduce new players to their curling club, they have come up with a new league.
“The Social League is a new league our club introduced this year to try to increase our membership and introduce more people to curling,” said Martensville Curling Club secretary Karen Gruza.

“This league is six weeks in duration and will take place once a week. The games are only six ends; as opposed to the usual eight. It offers a chance for people that maybe don’t want to, or can’t commit, to an entire curling season, which is from October to March,” Gruza added. She also noted that it is a great opportunity for people who are new to the sport of curling and want to “give it a try” or just want to have a fun evening out with some friends.

The first session is running from November 3 to December 8, and currently there are six teams entered, with room for two more. “We need to have an even number of teams in order to have each team play once a week,” said Gruza.

The Martensville Curling Club is also looking at running another one or two six-week session after Christmas with dates to be determined.

The Social League will run on Tuesday nights at 8:45pm. The fee is $100/person which includes a complimentary round each week.

If you are interested in joining this league you can contact Karen at kgruza1@gmail.com  or Heather at heatherburnett@sasktel.net

After working in the health region for 10 years, Jocelyn Ottenbreit decided she needed a change in her career. In the Spring of 2012, she began working part-time for the Martensville Messenger with the owner, Jo Osczevski. Part-time turned into full time for two years and in May, 2014, the Martensville Messenger Newspaper was up for sale. Jocelyn and her co-worker Shanine Sealey decided to buy the business in September of 2014 and haven’t looked back since. Jocelyn is responsible for graphic ad design, sales, distribution and production of the newspaper. Living in Martensville for 25 years, and as a mother of two grown children, she has seen many changes in the community over the years. Her passion is continuing to provide an informative, local newspaper that keeps the community up to date on our expanding city and all it has to offer.
