The Martensville Prairie Heat ladies’ softball team, coached by Marlin Johnson, is in its second year in the Lisa Down Division of the Ladies league, and the team showed a lot of improvement making the playoffs again this year. They finished their season with a 12-7-1 record placing third, only one point behind second place earning them a spot in the playoff round. The playoffs were a best of three series and started July 31. They faced the Mavericks in a double header falling to them in their first game 6-5. They bounced back in the second game and took a commanding 8-2 win forcing the playoffs to a third game. On Wednesday, August 2, they played game three and the Mavericks were first to strike scoring four in the first inning. The Heat answered back and made the game interesting scoring six runs in the 4th and had bases loaded but they couldn’t capitalize and the Mavericks came away with the win.
The Heat is made up of young ladies ranging from 18-24 years old, with eight of them from Martensville. Many of the girls played all their minor softball on Martensville teams over the years and are now playing together once again. Coach Marlin Johnson was happy with the girls’ season as the team showed a lot of improvement over their play last year. He wanted to thank all the girls for their commitment all season and for the playoffs as with this level, it’s always hard with work and school to fit a couple games of ball in. “The core group from last year and a few new girls on our team this year kept the team very competitive all season and we were able to have a little more success in league play this year” commented Johnson. “We fell short of the finals this year but very proud with the effort of going three games in the semi finals.”
