Annual Regional Race Evolves Since Inception

by Jocelyn Ottenbreit

The City of Martensville and the City of Warman are once again coming together for their Regional Race which will be held on Saturday, September 25th.

The Regional Race was started in 2017 by SREDA (Saskatchewan Region Economic Development Association) and by the two cities, but SREDA is no longer involved in this event. The goal was to help bring awareness to the diverse communities of Warman and Martensville, as well as encourage people to get active and promote the two communities.

“The race has really evolved since its inception. This year we are offering both a 5 and 10km race option and have made it ‘Run or Ride’ to get more people involved, even if they are not runners. In addition to the 5km option, we have made the race a fundraiser to help raise money for KidSport that benefits families in Martensville, Warman, and surrounding area,” said Jamie McCulloch, Recreation Program Coordinator II.

Each year, the start and finish lines alternate between the communities. This year the race will be starting in Martensville at the North Ridge Community Centre and will be ending in Warman at Oasis Park.

Something new that was created this year to prepare for the event is a Running Club. McCulloch said the club was created to get people excited about running and was geared toward those who are new to the sport or who were nervous about joining a race. Each week the run club progressed their duration of the run and currently are working on running for two minutes and walking for one minute. The goal of the run club, which is free to join, is to get everyone ready to run the 5km option of the Regional Race.

The race is also free to join this year, but they are asking those who registered to try and raise money for Kidsport on their pledge sheet.

“The race did not run in 2020 so we are very excited to bring it back this year. We would like to thank our sponsors: Ok Tire in Warman, Culligan, Martensville Co-op, Buy-Low Foods in Warman, Pet Valu in Martensville, the Saskatchewan Rush, and the Saskatoon Blades for their contributions to this year’s race,” said McCulloch.

Registration closes on Tuesday, September 14 at 12pm. For more information or to register visit https://warman-kidsport.myshopify.com/…/regional-run-ride. You can also visit the City of Martensville’s event page on Facebook, or warman.ca.
